On the Importance of Interfaces, Mobility and Interaction in Polymeric Nanocomposites. a Novel Characterization Methodology Based on Advanced Thermal Analysis

The present work aims at investigating the thermal properties of a wide range of semicrystalline nanocomposites based on poly(amide)-6 (PA6), ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) or polypropylene (iPP), in combination with various types of nanofillers (layered silicates, carbon nanotubes, sepiolite, or POSS). We report on the effect of nanofillers on the quasi-isothermal crystallization behavior of the matrix as assessed from MTDSC experiments, evidencing profound changes in the matrix/filler interphase region. Depending on the system, the results are interpreted in terms of polymer/filler interaction, reduced chain segment mobility and altered crystalline morphology, supported by data from a wide range of complementary techniques.
